on reflection…

THEMATICS

MIDDLES

  • taking place in liminal space, in-between, allows accidental occurrences

  • beginning + ending all in one, and the space in-between

TIME

  • preservation + capture of it

  • mortality

  • life cycles, cyclical nature

MIRRORS

  • mirror image = self reflection

  • only displaying what they see: nothing more, nothing less

NECESSITIES

  • taking place in LIMINAL SPACE

  • something being built OVER TIME - created

ASKING

When are flowers given?

  • beginning - weddings

  • middle - ??? celebrate LIFE

  • end - funerals

What flowers are symbolic?

  • TULIPS still grow after being cut

Why a Happening?

  • because it’s truly present - it’s being there, doing something - cannot be fully replicated or represented in the ways we think about

KEY WORDS

TIME: temporality, mortality, impermanence, fleeting

CYCLES: growth, preservation, planting, beginning/middle/end, past/present/future

REFLECTION: mirror-image, self-reflection

MEANING: sentimentaltiy, metaphor = flower, mirror

ADDING ELEMENTS
SOCIAL

  • How can we plant seeds that will outlive us? If mortality is inevitable, how can we preserve other reminders of life in other ways? Like the ways we preserve flowers

  • The literal social, in facilitating conversation

COLLECTIVE BUILDING

  • wish tree, social forest, kusama’s dots

  • all projects that ask something of the participant, to create something bigger + collective

HAPPENINGS

  • Kusama + Minujin

  • situational, present

ADDING - LITERALLY

  • stickers on lamposts

  • writing layered on walls, especially in toilets

  • locks on bridges

  • graffiti - on walls/floor

  • people leaving things in liminal spaces !!!

THOUGHTS

  • seeds remain, even when flowers die - the potential remains, seeds can be dispersed and so can change… but WHAT change?

  • finding the middle ground, the present moment

  • mortality + its limits - communities we build live on, power of collectivity, passing things on

  • everything is a mirror? play with mirror image in the preservation of time, and the present moment - the mirror only what is there NOW, cannot go back/forwards, just shows reality

VISUALS

rain shower on flower-bed

looking into a well, at reflection

mirror, different on each side

IDEAS

  • word on the street, around the city

  • guided meditation/planting

  • time flies - blink + you’ll miss it - like the flowers that are only momentarily in full bloom

  • treasure hunt/map of space - site-specific happenings + installation

  • durational montage making - 1 to 1, interview/conversation (irl + with the flowers), adding to installation, making a flower, the middle ground is being IN the room (beginning what they bring, ending what is created), seed paper used, flowers in exchange
